Foam Cushioning for Protective Packaging
The job of foam in protective packaging is to absorb transit impact before it reaches the product. With heavy or sharp-cornered items, density decides the outcome: dense material holds its shape through repeated impact, while low-density material crushes after the first blow and protects nothing thereafter.
Cutting to size, and offcut
Cushioning parts are usually cut to the shape of the product. Packers with their own cutting line prefer to take block and profile it in-house; for those without one, buying sheet already cut to size is more efficient in both offcut and labour.
This is where rebonded foam's reclamation loop turns once more: the offcuts that cutting produces are pressed back into material.
